Milla and Libby plant Rimu trees to help stop global warming.

Today Milla and Libby planted five rimu trees to help stop global warming.  They are very small so we all need to make sure they get looked after properly.  Please make sure they don't get knocked by balls or hit by people running past.

Levi W and Harry's Rat Trap plans

Me and Levi have been going down to the river.  And we have been cutting stinky plants down and today we saw rats.  So we were wondering if we could do a trap.  Here are two videos and we are thinking of the best one.  We will probably put a trap by the water because that's where we saw the rat.  We have chosen the first video because we have all the tools for it and with the second one we do not and it is hard.  You need a metal cylinder, peanut butter, a bucket and some water, also a screwdriver.  I will also bring some maize from home.

Libby, Elise and Austin making a start to help their cause.

Libby, Elise and Austin have written to the SPCA to find out what the SPCA needs.  This is what they wrote:

Hi there
We are from Lepperton School.  We are researching Causes Worth Fighting for.  We are doing it on cat and dog abuse.  A cause worth fighting for is something we think is important that we can help with.  We want to help the SPCA in any way we can.  So could you tell us what we could do to help you?  We would like to collect food or blankets or raise money.  What do you think?

Kind regards,
Libby, Elise and Austin.

Hopefully the SPCA writes back soon so they can start collecting the items the SPCA needs.

Milla and Myra Discuss Global Warming

Check out the clip Milla and Myra made to help educate people about global warming.  I love the idea of planting more trees girls, we have some Rimu trees you could plant at school to start helping the cause.

Chace's Writing

Once upon a time there was an egg, a really small, white egg. It belonged to an eel. Her name was Eely. The egg hatched into a larva! The larva swam to the river. When it got to the river mouth it turned into a glass eel and as it made its way up the river it started to change colour. When it reached the mountain Eli had  fully changed colour to black and he was now one and a half metres long. Eli started to make a hole in the bank. He got a mouth full of dirt and spat it out.  One day later, after lots of hard digging, the hole was about two metres into the bank.    Fins had grown. Eli got longer and fatter. The next day there was a massive trout. Eli chased it and was yelling can we be friends? The trout stopped and said yes if you don't try to eat me, my name is Mason. I was never going to eat you, Eli said come to my home it is in the clearest part of the lake, it was crystal clear. After they went to Eli’s house they went to the dock were humans came to fed the eels bread. Luckily there were no other eels here because they would try eat Mason. Mason saw a shiny bug he chased it. Eli shouted no its fish lure but it was too late. Mason was already hooked. The fisherman reeled Mason in. The fisherman grabbed Mason. Eli jumped up and knocked the fisherman into the water. The fisherman swam as fast as he could and crawled up the bank then ran as fast as he could to his truck. The lure was a treble hook lure. Treble hook mess up a fish mouth. Mason had a bleeding mouth quick get to my hole said Eli because the blood will attract other eels, you will be safe in my hole. They swam as fast as they could to Eli hole when the got to Eli hole, Eli said you can live here if you want to, ok said mason. Eli had an idea, he told mason to wait outside and an hour later you can come in Eli made the hole massive and made a room for mason, wow mason said now we can live together but said it is so dark, eli dug a hole in the roof for light,  thanks said mason.  The next day they went to the river mouth to see their friend Charlie he was a huge Kahawai he is a meter and a half long!!! And our other friend Torpedo he is a Yellowfin tuna they played in the river mouth 1 hour later one more thing. These two fish can live in freshwater back at the lake they had a party they had meat bugs and dead fish. The next day, they had bacon and eggs for breakfast and then they went to the river mouth and left the river mouth to go out to sea to find more friends 5 minutes later. The water is 50 m deep and there were schools of bluefin tuna. They found a bull shark he was crying they went up to ask him why he was crying. The bull shark said I don't have any friends because my old ones started bullying me! Eli said we will be your friends ok and my name Ben. Lets go to the River mouth were my home is. The next day they were getting ready for a trip to the mountain. To be continued ...

Assembly Planning

It is Kotahitanaga's turn to host assembly this week.  Everyone who wants to be involved in planning assembly got together for a meeting.  The teachers are letting us plan the whole assembly.  We have to try hard to make our planning work, take turns at talking and listening, and compromise when we don't agree about something.

Hapori o Manutahi

Over term 2 in our Hapori o Manutahi (Lepperton Community) unit we investigated whether or not kids at Lepperton School were bored at morning tea and lunchtimes.  We also found out what types of activities kids wanted to do at school, and ran activities at morning tea and lunch for all the students at school to participate in if they wanted to.  There were activities such as lego club, soccer, chess club, crafts, dancing and obstacle courses.  We then surveyed students again to see if our activities had any effect on how bored kids were.  Chace and Caylib's graph shows that our Hapori o Manutahi activities had a positive effect on how bored kids feel at break times at school.  We hope to continue these activities next term, to provide lots of different options for all students to participate in, and to give our Kotahitanga students leadership opportunities.

We are posting a excerpt (snippet) from our writing this week, so we can share with an audience.

Jessa:
Tap, tap, tap! There was the sound again. I started to creep towards the window, TAP, TAP, TAP! The sound got louder every second. I pulled up the shutters, AHHHH! I screamed. There at there at the window was a huge green creature. His dark beady black eyes stared right at me as though he could look right through my head. His body was a tub of green gooey slime. His teeth were as sharp as fangs and it made me petrified.

I walked onto the train looked left and right to look for the killer and in relief…. he wasn’t there. By the time I got to the place I ran to a hotel, asked for a room and went inside the room. I slammed the door shut and had a shower.

Games for Learning

We played Fraction Wall today.  It helped us to learn about equivalent fractions, adding fractions and thinking creatively.  Games are a great way to apply knowledge to real situations.

Genius Hour Reflection

Why do we need to do a reflection of our genius hour work?
Reflecting on what we learn during genius hour is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, so you can share with your teachers, classmates and mentors what you are learning. Secondly, so you can have time to think about what it is you are actually learning. You might be building a lego world and learning which pieces fit best together - but while you were doing this, you also learnt that you need to be organised to make the most of your time, that you need to get the lighting right to get good photos of your creations, that your friend had a good suggestion to help you figure out how to make your lego car look more realistic, which also meant that you were learning collaboration skills ... we could go on and on! You might not know what you will end up learning during genius hour, that is why it is important to reflect on your learning so you can think of all the skills you are developing.

Genius Hour Reflection Process:
-What did you do during genius hour today?  Tell us in a few sentences what you achieved.
-What did you learn during genius hour today?  Tell us about any problems you had, how did you fix them?
-What will your next steps be?  Have a plan in your head of what you need to achieve in the next genius hour.

Student Blogs

You may have noticed we now have links to student blogs at the top of our class blog.  Student blogs are a way for us to share our learning with each other, and with a wider community.  We are using them to share our learning during genius hour, it is an easy way for mentors to see what we have been up to each week.  We are learning about what makes a good learning reflection when we post on our blogs.  Not all students have their own blog, some have chosen to put their genius hour reflections on Seesaw.

Genius Hour!

In Kotahitanga we have started doing Genius Hour.  Watch the video to see what genius hour is about.

Some of our passions include; baking, art, bmx tricks, and raising chickens.  There is a plan to follow for genius hour:

So far, most of us have decided on our passion and are beginning to find a mentor how can give advice when we have problems.  We have to share with others what we are learning along the way.  Some of us are going to create blogs to share our learning, others are keeping a diary, some are creating videos.

Our genius hour projects might take a few weeks to finish, or it might take all year.  When we think we are finished, we have to share what we have created, learned or developed with the class and maybe with the world!

So far, genius hour is going well.  We are learning to set small goals towards achieving our big goals, and reflecting on how well we are achieving those small goals.  It is hard for some of us to plan ahead, but this is a great skill to learn.
