Over term 2 in our Hapori o Manutahi (Lepperton Community) unit we investigated whether or not kids at Lepperton School were bored at morning tea and lunchtimes. We also found out what types of activities kids wanted to do at school, and ran activities at morning tea and lunch for all the students at school to participate in if they wanted to. There were activities such as lego club, soccer, chess club, crafts, dancing and obstacle courses. We then surveyed students again to see if our activities had any effect on how bored kids were. Chace and Caylib's graph shows that our Hapori o Manutahi activities had a positive effect on how bored kids feel at break times at school. We hope to continue these activities next term, to provide lots of different options for all students to participate in, and to give our Kotahitanga students leadership opportunities.

I woke up. I was handcuffed to a pole, in a light yellow room. My feet were tied together, and my waist was tied to the pole. I looked up and there, standing on a platform, was Justin and Lucky.
“Like I said, you ain’t going nowhere without us!” Justin said with a smirk.

Games for Learning
We played Fraction Wall today. It helped us to learn about equivalent fractions, adding fractions and thinking creatively. Games are a great way to apply knowledge to real situations.

Genius Hour Reflection
Why do we need to do a reflection of our genius hour work?
Reflecting on what we learn during genius hour is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, so you can share with your teachers, classmates and mentors what you are learning. Secondly, so you can have time to think about what it is you are actually learning. You might be building a lego world and learning which pieces fit best together - but while you were doing this, you also learnt that you need to be organised to make the most of your time, that you need to get the lighting right to get good photos of your creations, that your friend had a good suggestion to help you figure out how to make your lego car look more realistic, which also meant that you were learning collaboration skills ... we could go on and on! You might not know what you will end up learning during genius hour, that is why it is important to reflect on your learning so you can think of all the skills you are developing.
Genius Hour Reflection Process:
-What did you do during genius hour today? Tell us in a few sentences what you achieved.
-What did you learn during genius hour today? Tell us about any problems you had, how did you fix them?
-What will your next steps be? Have a plan in your head of what you need to achieve in the next genius hour.

Student Blogs
You may have noticed we now have links to student blogs at the top of our class blog. Student blogs are a way for us to share our learning with each other, and with a wider community. We are using them to share our learning during genius hour, it is an easy way for mentors to see what we have been up to each week. We are learning about what makes a good learning reflection when we post on our blogs. Not all students have their own blog, some have chosen to put their genius hour reflections on Seesaw.

Genius Hour!
In Kotahitanga we have started doing Genius Hour. Watch the video to see what genius hour is about.
Some of our passions include; baking, art, bmx tricks, and raising chickens. There is a plan to follow for genius hour:
So far, most of us have decided on our passion and are beginning to find a mentor how can give advice when we have problems. We have to share with others what we are learning along the way. Some of us are going to create blogs to share our learning, others are keeping a diary, some are creating videos.
Our genius hour projects might take a few weeks to finish, or it might take all year. When we think we are finished, we have to share what we have created, learned or developed with the class and maybe with the world!
So far, genius hour is going well. We are learning to set small goals towards achieving our big goals, and reflecting on how well we are achieving those small goals. It is hard for some of us to plan ahead, but this is a great skill to learn.

Te Wera by McKenzie
|
I
just got to camp. It was called Te Wera.
I went up to my room. It was the bunk room. We were called Moa. I was in
there with Ava, Elise, Bianca, Zoey and Paige. I started to unpack. Next we
went down to the dining room. Mrs B said we are going to do some activities
like a rope course, spider web and more. After that my mum went. Then we had
afternoon tea and we went on the water slide and at the bottom was sheep poo! I got dressed and then played with my friends.
We had tea and went to bed.
Second day
I woke up and went down for breakfast. After breakfast I had a shower
got dress and went back to the dining room. We are going to do some activities.
I was doing camp fire cooking, Photography with Mrs H and bush survival. First
we did photography for that we had to write a story about the forest. My story
was about what I see, heard, and felt. Next was morning tea we had chocolate
biscuits and fruit. Next was camp fire cooking. For camp fire cooking you need
a hungry tummy, but I just had morning tea! We started walking to the farm where
the cooking was. We cooked banana split, potatoes, marshmallows and bread. My
favourite was the bread and potatoes. We had to go back for lunch. I did not
what lunch because I had morning tea and went camp fire cooking. I was already
full. The lunch was so good. After lunch we did bush survival. After that it
was afternoon tea. I love the food we get at camp. Next we had free time. Then
we had to go kayaking because on Wednesday it is supposed to be raining. My group
and another group went. I went in a car
with Mr Wells and Mrs H. We got there, my group got to go first. It was fun.
Callum fell out. That was really funny! When
we got back I went on the water slide. We had tea and then we had a game of
spot light and went to bed.
Third day
I woke up, the other girls were playing cards. I had a shower and then
went to breakfast but it was raining outside. For breakfast I had cornflakes, peaches
and weet-bix. I played in the dining room for a little bit. We were not going
to do any activities because it was raining. Some people stayed in their
cabins. At lunch time my dad came out for a little bit. I was going eeling, my
dad came. We put our lines in the water and we had to wait. We did not catch an
eel but we were going to leave them there and at night we were going to come
back. When we got back we went on the water slide again. My dad was holding the
hose and spraying people with it. It was my turn. Lee Cooper got dish washing
liquid in my mouth. Yuck!! It was so gross. Mr Cooper said to me that I should not have
had my mouth open! After the water slide I had a nice warm shower and got dressed
and went back to the dining room, everyone was playing games. I started to play
a game to but I can’t remember the name of the game. I loved the game. Next it
was tea time. I was serving the food up. The food looks so good. My favourite
was the bread because I made it. After that I went down to see if we got an
eel. My dad went home. I said to him wait to see if we got an eel, but he went.
Ethan got an eel but it was dead and it came off the line. We decided to go
back. We were going to leave the lines there and in the morning go and see if
we got one. So we went back and went to sleep.
Last day
I got up, I went down for breakfast. For breakfast there was ice-cream,
pancakes, eggs, chocolate and sausages. It was yummy!
After breakfast we went back to the eeling line. I was still in my pj’s.
Kate got an eel, we killed it. Kate called it Bob. The other kids went down the
river a little bit more. Leah or Nina got an eel. We started to walk back. My
friends packed up my stuff. My clothes for that day were in my bag so I could
not get dressed. I put my stuff in the Coopers car. I went in to the dining
room and made a card house. Next it was lunch time. For lunch we had burgers
and some smoked eel. The eel was so nice. After lunch I went down to play on
the flying fox and the playground. Next everyone was going home.
Good by camp Te Wera.
