My family and I went to the Waiongana River and collected harakeke (flax). First we said a karakia, then we cut harakeke leaves that were on the outside of the 'family' of leaves. We went home and made harakeke flowers, my daughter Māia taught us how to weave the flowers. Then we had to figure out the best way to attach the flowers to a circle base. We finally decided that a circle made from wire mesh would be the best solution, and we stuck the stalks of the harakeke flowers through the holes in the mesh, and tied knots to keep them firm. Then we hung the wreath on a screw in the fence.
Ka rawe Brunning whānau. I liked the way you were careful when you were picking your flax so that you didn't harm the plant. It is really cool to see a different type of wreath too compared the they types that I usually see at the cenotaph.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like an awesome wreath Mrs Brunning. It looks like you and your family spent a lot of time working on it. Kai Pai. From Jackson
